Winterizing Farms with Hemp - Hemp Bedding

Is your farm ready for winter? No matter the size of your farm, preparing for the winter is essential to ensure it remains safe and healthy. Take a look at our handy checklist to ensure you haven’t missed anything as you winterize your farm.

Step 1: Inspect and Inventory

Analyzing  various aspects of your operation is the first step to preparing your farm to handle whatever the season throws at it. Start by walking around your farm, and write down what needs to be done before winter hits.

Regular walkthroughs give you the chance to review farm machinery and equipment, identify current or potential problems and mark inventory levels. Taking inventory will help you know your need for feed and whether you have enough roughage to last. So, whether it’s prepping livestock and covering equipment or buying extra supplies and removing debris, take detailed notes.

Step 2: Boost the Barn

Clean out your barn and buildings by removing all the debris and safely storing any flammable items you may have. This is also a good time to make any necessary repairs before the weather turns to extreme conditions. If you live in an area with heavy snowfall, mmake sure your barn’s roof is strong to withstand the season’s snow.

When winterizing livestock barns, remember to eliminate drafts while still providing proper ventilation to prevent respiratory problems.

Keep manual tools like shovels, snow-scoops, ice scrapers and your roof rake handy and ensure your machinery is ready. There’s nothing worse than facing a foot of snow only to realize your plow-truck has a problem or that your snowblower or tractor won’t start. Come winter, you’ll be glad you thought ahead.

Step 3: Prepare the Livestock

Winterizing your farm is essential to ensuring the well-being of your animals. One of the most important things to consider is how you will keep your livestock supplied with fresh water in below-zero temperatures. Utilize tank heaters, heated buckets and automatic waterers for this purpose. This chart is an excellent resource for winter watering for livestock.

Preparing a warm and cozy sleeping nest is another critical step. Start by picking a draft-free part of the barn in a sheltered spot, then use HEMPALTA™ Premium Hemp Bedding to create a healthy, safe and warm space for your animals.

Hemp is an insulating material that acts as a temperature regulator by storing heat and releasing it slowly as the temperature cools.
