Giraffes Enjoy Sustainable Hemp Bedding
HEMPALTA Supports the Zoo’s Animal Care Services
CALGARY, Alberta (June 21, 2022) - Hempalta Inc. (“HEMPALTA” or the “Company”), a Canadian agricultural technology company focused on innovative hemp processing and product creation, today announced a 30-month sponsorship with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. The sponsorship will provide hemp bedding for the zoo’s giraffes ‘Nabo’, ‘Moshi’, ‘Carrie’ and ‘Emara’. This agreement, which runs until the end of 2024, supports the zoo’s standard of providing world-class animal care and sustainable habitat design practices.
As a proud Albertan company, HEMPALTA is committed to supporting local organizations such as the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. Along with hemp bedding, HEMPALTA will also provide other premium and sustainable hemp-based products such as its Hemp-Fresco™ food preservation pads and HempZorb™ all-natural spill cleanup.
“HEMPALTA’s commitment to providing the zoo with local hemp-based products will allow us to enhance our animal habitats using products that are in line with the zoo’s sustainability goals. We’re trialing the hemp bedding as the primary substrate in the giraffe indoor habitat and are excited to explore the possibility of use in other habitats across the zoo”, said Jamie Dorgan, Director of Animal Care, Health & Welfare at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.
HEMPALTA’s hemp bedding is naturally antibacterial, prevents skin irritation, and is comfortable for animals - all properties that make it a healthy choice for the zoo’s animal population. HEMPALTA Premium Hemp Bedding, which will be the used for giraffes at the zoo, can be used for other animals such as horses, chickens, reptiles, birds, rabbits, and other small animals.
Committed to its vision of making the planet healthier for everyone, HEMPALTA created its premium hemp bedding to be the only all-natural animal bedding made from 100% clean, whole, hemp granules. Not only is HEMPALTA Premium Bedding biodegradable and compostable, but it is also more absorbent than traditional animal bedding made of wood or straw, and the natural antibacterial properties of hemp provide more natural odor control. Its high performance makes it more cost effective and more sustainable.
“We’re using the natural strength and sustainability of this prairie crop to drastically improve how we make the everyday things we need with sustainability at the top of mind. Being able to give back to our community and support an incredible organization like the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an honour. We’re passionate about making the world better – cleaner, healthier, and more ecologically sound – for future generations,” said Darren Bondar, President and CEO of HEMPALTA.
The sponsorship also includes two other HEMPALTA sustainable products - Hemp-Fresco and HempZorb. Hemp-Fresco, the only natural food-saving pads made with 100% Canadian-grown hemp core granules, will help the zoo keep food fresh longer. HempZorb is a 100% natural spill absorbent that quickly contains spilled liquids and will keep the zoo cleaner and safer for everyone.
HEMPALTA applies new technology to commercial-scale hemp processing to deliver a variety of consumer products and supply processed hemp for industrial applications. HEMPALTA’s state-of-the-art, patented HempTrain™ advanced processing plant allows them to process industrial hemp into clean, high-value bast fiber, green microfiber, and hurd (the woody interior of the hemp stalk).
